Specialty Work
Remediation Site
Cook County, Illinois

The Remediation Project required the construction of a 90,000 square feet sprung fabric containment building for the purposes of soil remediation. Hayward Company served as the prime mechanical contractor. In addition to fabrication, installation, and maintenance services, we supplied design assistance for this project.

As part of the project, Hayward installed eleven 20,000 pound carbon filtration units with accompanying fans. These units and fans connected to 10 and 12 gauge black iron ductwork served as the discharge air purification system for the structure. Outside air intake louvers and dampers were installed on the opposite side of the structure. This enabled air to be drawn across the huge work area and filtered through the units before exhausting into the atmosphere. All the ductwork was fabricated at our shop in Schiller Park.

Hayward provided both installation and maintenance crews that worked around the clock to meet the rigorous six week schedule. Each crew member received 40 hours of OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Training. Upon completing the installation of the equipment and ventilation system, we provided the site with around the clock maintenance personnel to ensure system performance.

As the winter season approached, Hayward was entrusted to design and implement a snow melt device for the sprung structure/tent to prevent snow accumulation on its roof. We installed three 4.5 million BTU direct gas fired heaters along with spiral distribution ductwork ranging in size from 22 to over 50 inches in diameter. This duct was put in place at the roof line approximately 80 feet in the air. When required, the started units heated the air and delivered it to the roof line to heat the structure and melt the accumulating snow in a rapid fashion.

Remediation of the site continues to this day in the form of a smaller sprung structure. Hayward is still on-site as the prime mechanical contractor providing design, installation, and maintenance support. The smaller structure, like the above, includes two carbon filtration units, fans and associated ductwork.
